Educational value
  • Through images and music, television title sequences like this one from 'Lift Off' foreshadow the content and mood of the program. The vibrant music and animation, the wacky characters and images, such as a pelican perched on a hamburger or the sun peering out of a window in the sky that turns into the headlights of a car that drives out the window and down a ladder, suggest the program will be action-packed and combine elements of fantasy and reality.
  • Title sequences are designed to make viewers want to watch the program, so in this clip the fun and excitement of 'Lift Off' is emphasised and pauses are omitted. Exuberant and repetitive theme music provides an anthem for the program, and fast-paced animation using rapid edits and camera zooms create a sense of constant movement as figures transform into other shapes, characters race across the screen or appear to charge towards the camera.
  • Title sequences often introduce the characters that will be featured in the episode to follow, such as this clip which shows the 'Lift Off' children, the magical rag doll EC, Mr Fish the caretaker of the apartment where they live, Lotis the artificial intelligence in the elevator, and the frill-necked lizard who is making a film about the children, as well as the Wakadoo puppets. It acts as a reminder to children who are familiar with the characters.
  • Title sequence music aims to present an easily recognisable ‘anthem’ to announce the beginning of a program and capture the nature or mood of what is to follow. In 'Lift Off' a fast-paced 4-4 beat maintained by brass instruments and percussion is interspersed with a number of sound effects to create an impression of non-stop action, which will be attractive to children.
  • This clip uses cell animation, in which 24 frames per second are filmed to create the illusion of movement. Each small change in the characters' or objects' movements is painted on separate cells and filmed on top of a series of painted landscapes and backgrounds. As in live action, camera angles and shot sizes create different perspectives, but the clip demonstrates that animation can go further, creating fantastical images that can transform into something else.
  • This clip shows the title sequence from 'Lift Off', an educational television series produced by the Australian Children's Television Foundation for children from 3 to 8 years old. Using actors, puppets and animation in a blend of fiction, fantasy and documentary, it is designed to entertain while it educates. The critically acclaimed series received an Australian Film Institute Award for Best Children's Television Drama and an Australian Teachers of Media Award.
